Where better to start than the here and now? I begin my quest by listening to this week’s top-selling album, and I can’t be disappointed. Adele’s 21 isn’t just impressive because of her titular age. It is a relief in a world where full-bodied voices are rarely paired with songwriting and production styles aggressive enough to bring out their power. The first two tracks, “Rolling in the Deep” and “Rumor Has It,” are super-percussive, textured and hard-hitting, giving the record the kind of energetic opening it needs to capture attention for its entirety. The soul-vibed piano-rock songs that follow are a welcome contrast as the album continues. It’s good to hear a female pop singer with enough spunk and personality to earn her sentimentality.
